Environmental Tobacco smoke and risk of malignant lymphoma in pet cats.
By E. Bertone, A. S. Moore, American Journal of Epidemiology

Cats living with smokers are almost two and a half times as likely to acquire malignant lymphoma as those in nonsmoking households.

Cats not only inhale smoke, they also ingest particulate matter by licking it from their fur while grooming. One hundred eighty cats treated at Tufts from 1993-2000 were studied.  Eighty of these cats were treated for lymphoma and 100 were treated for renal failure (control group). Duration and level of smoke exposure was related to the rate of lymphoma with cats exposed to smoke for five or more years of living with humans smoking a pack or more a day being more than three times as likely to develop lymphoma.

It’s the Law
Did you know, according to Miami-Dade County Code,  Section 5-2.2 and Section 8cc-10, that anyone who sells puppies or kittens has to pay a license fee? All persons, not just commercial breeders.

A client of a county vet was given a citation for failing to register and take out the necessary license, which costs $25. There are penalties which go along with the failure to obtain the permit, and the code enforcement people can inspect the premises for other infractions

Open  Door Miami

Miami Pets  Alive has launched an educational program entitled “Open Door Miami.” The basis of this program is the information which was garnered from a survey conducted by the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy.

The survey found:
   •  35 percent of people without pets would own a pet if their rental housing permitted
   •  If all rental housing permitted pets, 6.5 million animals could be placed in good homes
   •  The refusal by landlords to allow pets ranks as the most often cited reason for giving up dogs and the third most cited reason for surrendering cats to an animal shelter.

Open Door Miami is a program that shows landlords the benefits of a carefully designed an implemented Pets Welcome policy and teaches tenants how to find, increase, and maintain pet friendly housing in our community. Additionally, it fosters collaboration of animal welfare organizations to provide support services that are essential to retention of pets and successful pet ownership.

Part of the information which is required when applying for permission to have a pet in an apartment is the name and address of the veterinarian who provides veterinary services for the pet.
