Where Do Ticks Come From?
By Peter Fernandes, DVM
The new answer: “They come from Home Depot or Lowes.” This may sound far
fetched, but recent experience supports the contention. After no problems
during six years in a new home, recently a big infestation occurred to the point
where the ticks were not only on two little dogs, but were crawling on the floor
and the walls. Nothing around the house had changed, no new dogs or neighbors.
What happened was that sod was brought in from Home Depot for the back yard and
infestation started about two weeks afterwards. This makes sense as the St.
Augustine sod farms are in the cattle country of central Florida. Cattle and
ticks go together. Ticks are in the sod when it is harvested and sold by your
sod supplier.
Spray or spread Diazinon according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
